Hello and welcome to Three Rooms. I had the idea for this podcast a few years ago, having worked as a newspaper lifestyle journalist and homes magazine editor for over two decades.
Because home has always meant so much to me. Growing up on what was a council estate in a small Hampshire village, I became aware very early of how much people attach status and identity to where you live.
Many of my friends had bigger homes, and my mum often felt uneasy about ours. She was reluctant to invite people over unless they came from a similar socio-economic background. But despite that, she cared very much about making our house feel beautiful. She always put flowers in the sitting room, my bedroom too, rearranged furniture, got the nicest bed linen and soft furnishings we could afford and tried to create warmth and pride in the space we had.
I think that experience shaped me profoundly. It taught me that home is emotional. Rooms carry memories, tensions, ambitions and love. They influence how we see ourselves and how we believe others see us too.
That’s really the heart of Three Rooms. When I ask guests to talk about the three most important rooms from their lives, I’m not just asking about interiors but about identity, belonging and the moments that shaped them. Because often where we are makes us who we are
